Following Madagascar Airlines on Thursday, it is now Royal Air’s turn to add its name to the flight schedule between the two countries. This private Comorian airline inaugurated its flight connecting Moroni and Mahajanga on Saturday, August 1st. Its aircraft landed on the tarmac of Philibert Tsiranana Airport in Amborovy, located in the capital of the Boeny region.
With two inaugural flights operated by two different companies over a single weekend, the reopening of the Madagascar-Comoros route marks the revival of an economic corridor that had been dormant for nearly five years. For four years, passengers and economic operators had to deal with longer and more expensive connections to travel between the Great Island and the archipelago.
The Comorian Minister of Maritime and Air Transport, Yasmine Hassane Alfeine, was on the inaugural Royal Air flight, signaling that this connection goes beyond simple commercial interests to become part of a deliberate regional cooperation strategy. “This new route will contribute to facilitating the mobility of people, boosting economic, tourism, and cultural exchanges, and consolidating the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Comoros and Madagascar,” the Embassy of the Union of the Comoros in Madagascar stated in a press release.
The arrival of this flight was welcomed by tourism stakeholders in Mahajanga, which hosts a large Comorian community on the Great Island. According to the Boeny Regional Tourism Office, these new routes strengthen the historical ties between Madagascar and Comoros and are expected to stimulate tourism, economic exchanges, and traveler mobility between the two countries, to the benefit of the Boeny region.
Now, as with any air route restarting after a long interruption, the test of time remains to see if these connections will be sustainable. Flight occupancy, service regularity, and the ability of local economic actors to seize this opportunity will be the true indicators of success in the coming months.
