Alternative rock aims to reclaim its place on the Malagasy stage. This Sunday, the Skate Park will host the first edition of “Reviv’Alt,” an event organized by Rar Project, a collective of artists passionate about this musical genre. The day will be filled with concerts, skateboarding, tattoos, custom motorcycles, and gatherings for enthusiasts.
The lineup will feature High o Mellow, Ikala, Grey, and Rar Project, with the participation of the Mauritian band Silver Bullet X. This presence will give the event an international dimension, designed as a space for exchange between the Malagasy and Mauritian music scenes.
In Madagascar, alternative rock developed notably in the 1990s and early 2000s, with bands such as AL Doudh, Menalootsa, Good For Nothing, Sweety Punk, Vain, I’NN, Ikala, Océana, and UXT. Several trends emerged during that time, particularly around the Kotaba movement, contributing to the renewal of the Malagasy rock landscape.
Over the years, however, the alternative scene has gradually diminished. With “Reviv’Alt,” Rar Project hopes to revive public interest in this musical genre and remind everyone that alternative rock continues to exist in Madagascar.
The event also aims to highlight a new generation of artists, notably High o Mellow and Grey, who are beginning to find their place on the Malagasy music scene.
