TRAGEDY – A 27-year-old woman and a rescuer die following a taxi-be accident in the Ambohidahy tunnel

A 27-year-old woman was among the two people who died following a serious traffic accident on Tuesday afternoon in the Ambohidahy tunnel. She was walking on the sidewalk when she was struck by a taxi-be (public transport minibus). A rescuer in his thirties also succumbed to his injuries after arriving at the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona Hospital (HJRA).

A total of nine people were injured in the accident. One person was discharged after receiving necessary care, while six others remained under medical observation at the HJRA on Tuesday evening. Among the injured is a 42-year-old woman, the wife of Nirintsoa Edmond, who was struck while returning from work.

The accident occurred when a taxi-be traveling from Analakely towards Anosy hit several pedestrians on the sidewalk. While initial reports suggest brake failure, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause. Minister of Transport and Meteorology, Herizo Andrianavalona, announced that the cooperative’s documents and the driver’s license will be revoked. The driver is currently in police custody at the Tsaralalàna station. The Minister urged public transport owners to conduct regular technical inspections to prevent future tragedies.

Government officials, the Governor of the Analamanga region, and representatives from the prefecture visited the scene and the hospital to offer condolences and announced that the state will cover the medical expenses for the injured.
