The Avenue of Independence is set for a facelift. Renovation work on this infrastructure was officially launched on Friday. The four-month project will be funded by mining royalties paid by Ambatovy to the Atsinanana Region. According to the interim Regional Chief, Jean Jugus Razafiarison, 5 billion ariary from these royalties will be mobilized to carry out the project.
“We chose to use these resources for a project of public interest,” explained Jean Jugus Razafiarison. The project involves the rehabilitation of two kilometers of road on this iconic Toamasina avenue, as well as the development of green spaces and fountains.
Announced in May by local authorities, this rehabilitation follows several years of degradation of the avenue, which was exacerbated by the passage of Cyclone Gezani last February. The Urban Commune of Toamasina is also participating in the project. Its mayor, Alain Andriafanomezantsoa, indicated that the royal palms lining the garden of the Avenue of Independence will be replaced as part of the improvements.
Fidèle Razara Pierre, Vice-President of the National Assembly for the Toamasina province, who was present at the ceremony, welcomed the realization of the project and congratulated the Regional Chief for dedicating these resources to a public interest project.
Regional authorities indicated that this rehabilitation program will not be limited to the city of Toamasina alone but will also extend to other districts of the Atsinanana Region. The regional delegation is continuing a tour in Ilaka-Est and Mahanoro this weekend to initiate other road rehabilitation projects.
