“Qui Lalao,” a cultural event bringing together young and old around traditional games and childhood board games, will be held at Five Soccer Amoronakona. Games of yesteryear are coming back to life.
Kasikasikapoaka, sack races, and Rahosin-jamba will take center stage during “Qui Lalao,” a recreational day aimed at bridging generations through Malagasy recreational heritage. Scheduled for this Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM at Five Soccer Amoronakona, the event offers a chance to rediscover games that marked the childhood of many Malagasy people, while adapting them to modern expectations.
The program includes Rahosin-jamba (the Malagasy equivalent of blind man’s buff), the jute sack race (also known as “gony” race), and Kasikasikapoaka. Board game enthusiasts will also be able to rediscover traditional practices, notably Fanorona, a strategy game once played by kings, and Katro, an ancestral game of calculation and reflection played with seeds, stones, or tokens in pits. Other traditional games will complete the activities, with some events revisited in modern, sometimes giant, formats to appeal to younger generations. Participants can also take on various challenges to win rewards, with prizes reaching up to 100,000 ariary.
Beyond gaming, “Qui Lalao” focuses on conviviality and sharing. The day will be punctuated by musical entertainment, including an open mic session. A large tasting table will also highlight Malagasy specialties and local producers. All these activities are included in the entrance ticket.
Through this initiative, the organizers aim to preserve and transmit traditional practices that contribute to Malagasy cultural identity. “The goal is to allow young people to discover these sometimes forgotten games, while offering the generations who knew them a chance to reconnect with their childhood memories,” explains a member of the organizing team. About a hundred participants are expected for this day that seeks to create a dialogue between tradition and modernity.
Behind “Qui Lalao” are five students from the National Institute of Accounting Sciences and Business Administration (INSCAE), who designed the event to put their management behavior course lessons into practice. The project serves as a concrete experience in organization, communication, market research, and event management. For co-founders Eulalie Lucia Rafaliharisoa and Andraiina Fandresena Mamihasina Erica Christina, this day illustrates the possibility of promoting cultural heritage through play, sharing, and unifying experiences for the youth.
