CATASTROPHE – A violent fire strikes the Bazary Kely market in Toamasina overnight from Sunday to Monday

The Bazary Kely market in Toamasina has once again fallen victim to fire. The port city spent a sleepless night trying to save its iconic market from the flames between Sunday and Monday. According to the Toamasina city hall, the fire broke out around 10:40 PM on Sunday. Initial reports indicate that the flames affected both sections of the market, with early estimates suggesting significant damage.

Roland Ratsiraka, the elected deputy for Toamasina, lamented that the lack of access roads for fire trucks hindered effective firefighting operations. He also expressed regret over the insufficient number of fire hydrants near the market. He emphasized that this is not the first time fire has struck this iconic Toamasina landmark, noting that three or four similar incidents have occurred in the past. The most recent fire took place just over a year ago, in April 2025, resulting in substantial losses.
