Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison’s visit to China last week has opened new perspectives for cooperation between the two countries, with agriculture, digital technology, transport, and science and technology identified as key areas.
The Prime Minister emphasized the multisectoral nature of this partnership upon his return to Ivato on Saturday. A major focus is agricultural cooperation, particularly increasing rice yields through Chinese hybrid varieties. During his visit to Hunan province, he noted that hybrid rice can produce up to 15 tons per hectare.
Following the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), memorandums of understanding were signed with Yuan’s Seed to produce hybrid rice seeds locally in Madagascar, specifically in Betsipotika, near Morondava, to reduce import dependency. The Prime Minister also highlighted the potential for exporting Malagasy goat meat to China and discussed energy cooperation, particularly solar power and the modernization of the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA) through the ‘Tana Medium Ring’ project. Additionally, he explored the application of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to improve daily life.
