The Institute of Civilizations, Museum of Art and Archaeology of the University of Antananarivo (ICMAA) has unveiled two exhibitions aimed at strengthening the conservation and transmission of national heritage.
Madagascan heritage is gaining new momentum. Starting today, the ICMAA is opening two exhibitions that mark a new milestone in the promotion, conservation, and transmission of the material traces of Madagascar’s history.
Presented simultaneously, these two exhibitions reflect a shared desire to regenerate the ICMAA and renew its museum identity. The project was redesigned with designer Domi Sanji, who worked on the scenography and visual identity of the museum. It includes a permanent archaeology exhibition, intended to remain accessible to the public for several years, as well as a temporary exhibition titled ‘Doria Vita Sokitra’, which will be open until December 19.
The permanent exhibition offers a journey dedicated to archaeology, its methods, its objects of study, and the challenges related to their conservation. Created from the ICMAA’s collections—among the most significant in the Indian Ocean and built since the 18th century—it allows visitors to explore several millennia of Madagascar’s history through the artifacts preserved in the museum.
Meanwhile, the temporary exhibition ‘Doria Vita Sokitra’ highlights Malagasy funerary arts through a more sensitive and anthropological approach. According to Dr. Bako Rasoharifetra, archaeologist and museographer: ‘This exhibition is organized around three themes: daily life, dreams, and the place of men and women in society. Through sculptures and practices related to funerary rites, it reveals the symbolic and cultural richness of Malagasy artisanal creations.’
