TRAFFIC – Weekend accident toll rises

Many people go out and enjoy themselves every weekend, which also leads to a sharp increase in car and two-wheeler traffic on the roads, especially at night. However, this situation causes numerous traffic accidents due to drunkenness, excessive speed, and driver recklessness.

For example, five traffic accidents occurred in Antananarivo between September 7 and 11, according to officials from the National Gendarmerie. Some of these accidents even resulted in fatalities.

National roads are among the locations where many accidents have been observed. Traffic increases during weekends due to the high number of people going out for entertainment, which raises the risk of accidents. “Some drivers do not respect the traffic code, so one must always remain cautious,” says Aina Andriatsihala, a driver interviewed.

In addition to gas stations, which have become popular hangout spots, drinking establishments are also among the most frequented places, particularly in Antananarivo. Many motorists and two-wheeler riders get behind the wheel while intoxicated after consuming too much alcohol, which can lead to accidents. “Sometimes, some people continue to drink and then drive home,” explains Léonie Razafimihaja, owner of a drinking establishment.

The recklessness of two-wheeler riders also contributes to the increase in the number of road accidents. Some drive at excessive speeds or overtake in dangerous areas. Others do not wear helmets, especially when they believe law enforcement presence on the roads is low.

“Some two-wheeler riders are not afraid of colliding with oncoming vehicles. Sometimes they even race at full speed as if they were chasing each other,” continues Aina Andriatsihala.
