Only the equipment remains to be installed before the semi-industrial production unit in Sambaina becomes operational. Located in Morarano, in the Ambatomainty fokontany, Ambohibary Sambaina commune, Antsirabe II district, this infrastructure is designed to process local agricultural produce to add value. Fruits will be processed into juice or dried, while corn, beans, and rice will be turned into flour or fortified foods.
Funded by the Food Systems Resilience Project (FRSP), the facility includes an 80-ton potato storage warehouse, a drying area, and a processing unit. Equipment for the small factory is expected to be delivered by a World Food Programme (WFP) contractor. Electricity will be provided by solar panels, and the site features a well, a water tower, and a water supply system. An office, funded by the beneficiaries, is currently under construction.
The unit aims to bridge the gap between agricultural production, processing, and markets in a region where agriculture is a primary economic sector. Part of the production will be purchased by the WFP and the National Nutrition Office (ONN) to supply local school canteens. Of the 21 schools with canteens in Vakinankaratra, 11 are located in the Ambohibary commune.
The construction was carried out under the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Structured Labour-Intensive (HIMO) project, involving three small local enterprises. Ten people recruited from Morarano were integrated into the construction teams.
According to Harisoa Randriantsarafara, acting coordinator of HIMO projects at the ILO, the structured HIMO approach aims to build quality infrastructure while promoting local job creation. The handover of the works is scheduled for the coming days.
The supply and management of the unit are expected to involve around a hundred associations and cooperatives in Vakinankaratra. For Noelinirina Rajaonarison, president of the FKTV cooperative association, the site will help create more market opportunities for producers, support school canteens, and generate activities and jobs for farmers and youth.
