LITERATURE – An international competition to strengthen interest in the Russian language in Africa and worldwide

“Glagol” or “verb” in Russian. This is the name of an international literary competition organized for Russian-speaking authors around the world. The initiative aims to strengthen interest in the Russian language and literature globally, particularly in Africa, where interest is reportedly growing among young people, according to Oleg Ozerov, the Russian Ambassador to Moldova. “The interest of young Africans, not only in sub-Saharan Africa but also in North Africa and the Arab world, in the Russian language continues to grow,” stated the diplomat, who also serves as the competition commissioner for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The “Russian Glagol” competition aims to highlight Russian-speaking authors from different regions of the world, notably Africa, Asia, and Latin America, beyond the countries of the former Soviet Union. The initiative is open to Russian-speaking writers, poets, playwrights, and translators, regardless of their country of origin, experience, or level of language proficiency. Participants may submit poems, short stories, and other literary works.

Applications are open until September 10, 2026, with the possibility of an extension. Works can be submitted via the website rusglagol.org or by email at [email protected]. The competition is scheduled to conclude on November 26. Winners will be invited to Moscow for the awards ceremony. Supported by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives, and the Russian Writers’ Union, the competition serves as a platform to foster cultural exchanges between Russian-speaking authors from different countries.
