The 106th Archbishop of Canterbury continues her tour of West Africa. Following a visit to Ghana, the head of the Anglican Church, Sarah Mullally, has arrived in Cameroon. On Saturday, the first woman to lead the Church of England visited the South-West region of Cameroon, one of the two English-speaking areas affected by a separatist conflict since 2017. This stop marks the second day of her visit to Cameroon, part of her first African tour since taking office in January 2026.
Upon arriving in Yaoundé on Friday, Sarah Mullally stated that she came to “bring the word of the Gospel” in a context marked by conflict and suffering. She was welcomed in the capital by the Cameroonian Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji. In the city of Buea, the religious leader visited the Doctor Biaka Memorial Foundation, a charity that trains medical personnel, before meeting with church officials in Limbe.
The English-speaking North-West and South-West regions are the scene of a conflict between government forces and separatist groups. The crisis originated from the crackdown on teacher and lawyer protests in late 2016, who were denouncing the growing influence of the predominantly Francophone central government in the educational and judicial systems of the Anglophone regions, where about 20% of the Cameroonian population lives.
According to the United Nations, this conflict has left at least 6,000 civilians dead since 2016. More than 330,000 people were internally displaced in Cameroon in 2025, while over 100,000 others had found refuge in neighboring Nigeria. Sarah Mullally’s visit to this area comes nearly four months after that of Pope Leo XIV to Bamenda, another major city in the Anglophone region.
The head of the Anglican Church is scheduled to continue her stay until August 4th. She will celebrate mass on Sunday in Douala before meeting with representatives of the Cameroonian government on Monday in Yaoundé. Before arriving in Cameroon, Sarah Mullally visited Ghana, where she toured a memorial site dedicated to the transatlantic slave trade.
A 63-year-old former nurse, Sarah Mullally took office as head of the Anglican Church in January. Her appointment has caused divisions within the Anglican community, particularly in Africa, due to her gender and her support for same-sex marriage.
