Mpox has claimed another life. The victim was a one-month-old infant who passed away in the Atsinanana region, according to the latest epidemic update provided yesterday by Professor Jean de Dieu Mamy Randria, incident manager at the Health Emergency Operations Center (Cousp). This marks yet another child victim of Mpox in Madagascar. Since the first cases were identified in December 2025, 22 deaths have been reported. These victims are primarily individuals living with HIV/AIDS and children.
“Pregnant women, children under 5, and people with chronic illnesses are the most vulnerable to this disease. For them, the risk of complications and death is high,” explains the infectious disease specialist. The professor advises pregnant women to take precautions to avoid contracting the disease and urges everyone to protect children, especially infants. “It is strongly recommended to restrict visits to infants and avoid physical contact to reduce the risk of infection,” he advises.
The epidemic continues to evolve in Madagascar. According to the Ministry of Public Health’s report covering the period from December 18, 2025, to July 28, 2026, the country has recorded a total of 4,798 notified cases of Mpox, with 3,146 confirmed. A total of 2,184 people have recovered. However, the health situation remains concerning, with a high positivity rate of 72.67%.
