The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) is turning the page on the old electoral roll. The comprehensive revision of the electoral list was launched this Tuesday in Talata Volonondry and will continue for four months. Citizens have until November 24 to register on the new list, which will be used for the upcoming elections scheduled for 2027.
“We are establishing a new electoral roll for all elections and referendums planned for 2027,” stated Thierry Rakotonarivo, President of the CENI, during the launch of the comprehensive revision in Talata Volonondry on Tuesday.
This overhaul follows several criticisms and disputes surrounding the previous electoral list, which was considered one of the sources of tension during past elections. For the CENI, registration on the electoral roll remains an essential step for citizens to exercise their political rights.
Beyond the right to vote, it also allows for other election-related actions. “When a person is not registered on the electoral roll, they do not have the right to monitor the conduct of elections and referendums organized in their place of residence,” the head of the election management body reminded. “They also do not have the right to file a complaint or contest the results of these polls,” he added.
The CENI has planned five methods for registration on the new electoral roll. Registrations can be made at the ‘fokontany’ (local administrative units) upon presentation of a national identity card. Agents will also conduct mobile registration operations to reach populations far from registration offices. Furthermore, the CENI is providing mobile teams and specific arrangements for people with reduced mobility or those unable to travel. The goal is to allow the largest number of eligible citizens to register on this new electoral roll before the operation closes on November 24.
