Harold Tavares, Executive Director of the World Bank, is on an official visit to Madagascar. His program includes meetings with high-ranking state officials and field visits.
This two-day routine visit aims to evaluate the impact of the financial institution’s actions on the ground. Tavares, representing the Africa Group II at the World Bank Board of Directors, will meet with the Prime Minister, government members, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Madagascar (BFM).
The visit will include field trips to observe projects in key sectors such as water, energy, and urban development. The World Bank is a major financial partner for Madagascar, currently funding sixteen projects worth $3.8 billion.
For the Malagasy authorities, this visit is a strategic opportunity to present the priorities of the General Policy of Refoundation (PGR) and to advocate for future funding. However, the country faces a significant challenge: a low disbursement rate of funds, often attributed to administrative delays and bureaucracy, a concern acknowledged by both the Minister of Economy and Finance and the Prime Minister.
