TABLE TENNIS – AFRICAN YOUTH CUP – Elijaharisoa and Andriamihaja secure two victories

Flawless performance. Two table tennis players from the Great Island (Madagascar) delivered strong results during the first day of the African Youth Cup yesterday in Accra, Ghana. In the U19 boys’ category, Andriamihaja Rakotovao achieved a double win right from the start. He defeated Cameroonian Maxell Ndzelen 3-1 (11/4, 5/11, 13/11, 11/6) in his first match, and subsequently edged out Mauritian Lilian Arokeum 3-2 (12/10, 10/12, 12/10, 12/14, 11/4) in a suspenseful encounter. Elijaharisoa Andriamampandry also enjoyed a successful debut, winning both of his U15 matches. He first triumphed 3-1 (12/10, 9/11, 11/9, 11/8) against Tunisian Moeman Sghaier, and then dominated Beninese Chrisman Codo 3-0 (11/2, 11/3, 11/5).

In the U19 boys’ category, Mamy Rakotoarisoa recorded one win and one loss against Ghanaian Mickaël Yeboah (3-1) and Tunisian Youssef Aidji (0-3) respectively. In the U15 girls’ category, Mbolatiana Ravoharimanana defeated Beninese Christ Amadji (3-0) following her initial loss to Ghanaian Joanita Borteye (0-3). In the same category, Fiderana Ranarison lost her opening match against Tunisian Elee Abassi (0-3) but recovered by defeating Ghanaian Franka Amoako (3-1). Idealy Rakotonanahary secured a victory against Beninese Christelle Amadji (3-0) but suffered two defeats against Egyptians Malak Zaki (0-3) and Nada (0-3).

Other players have yet to record a win after their first two matches, namely David Ranarison (U15 boys), Rhandy Rakotondrazaka (U19 boys), and Jennie Rakotonirina, Rina Océane Rakotondrazaka, and Tina Andriatahina (U19 girls). Some players competed in the third round yesterday evening. The final part of the group stage, followed by the knockout phase, will take place this Wednesday, the final day of the continental youth summit.
