POWER CUTS – Jirama Director General suspects sabotage

General Hajatiana Rasolomanana, interim Director General of Jirama, held a press conference yesterday to address the recent wave of power outages, suggesting that acts of sabotage may be behind the disruptions.

An investigation is now underway. General Rasolomanana stated that a joint investigation by the police and gendarmerie, overseen by the Public Prosecutor of the Antananarivo Court of Appeal, has been launched to examine these “suspicious incidents.”

The General highlighted several specific events, including a fuel tanker breakdown that blocked access to thermal power units, and a mysterious fire in a medium-voltage cell at the Andekaleka hydroelectric plant, which caused a total blackout on the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA) on Sunday evening. He noted that such incidents are unprecedented and point toward potential retaliation or destabilization efforts.

The Jirama management emphasized that these events followed a parliamentary inquiry into the company’s operations and a directive from the Head of State regarding the performance of the private contractor Enelec in several major cities.
