Toamasina remains plagued by recurring power outages. Jirama subscribers in the city are complaining about multiple cuts per day. “We are forced to buy ice elsewhere to preserve our fish because our freezer does not work due to the recurring power cuts in our neighborhood. The root of the problem is an electrical phase issue,” testified Bruno, a fishmonger, yesterday.
In other neighborhoods, such as Ankirihiry, Antanandava, or Valipson, power is reportedly cut several times a day. “To operate on a patient, we are forced to use a generator,” testified a doctor who runs a clinic in Ankirihiry.
The National Consumer Defense Network (RNDC) asserts that electricity supply is not improving in this port city. Jirama Atsinanana, for its part, claims a clear improvement in the situation. A source within the company even describes this progress as “very clear,” while conceding that load shedding still persists.
