Scheduled rolling blackouts have returned to Antananarivo. Jirama states that it must resort to these power cuts due to insufficient production caused by delays in fuel supply to the thermal power plant (TAC) in Ambohimanambola. Without the electricity generated by this thermal plant, the Antananarivo interconnected grid, which is already suffering from a critical drop in water levels at the Andekaleka dam, is facing a production gap of 25 MW.
“Faced with this drop in production, the company is implementing rolling blackouts until 5:30 PM, lasting one and a half hours per sector,” Jirama announced on its Facebook page. The national water and electricity company nonetheless indicates that it is seeking solutions to restore supply to the capital and its surrounding areas.
The possibility of using cloud seeding to raise the water level of the river that powers Andekaleka has been mentioned. According to Jirama, the level is currently at its alert threshold of 358.5 meters. However, the company hopes that the conditions for artificial rain will be met this weekend and early next week.
