As part of an awareness campaign on sexual violence in universities, the NGO Alternatives Madagascar organized a conference titled “Campus for Equality” at the School of Law and Political Science (EDSP) of the University of Ambondrona last Thursday.
Invited to the campaign, Sitraka Maria Patrick Razanabahoaka, the territorial director of the Independent Anti-Corruption Bureau (Bianco) in Mahajanga, provided students with insights into the legal framework and criminal procedures regarding sexual violence in academic settings.
The official led an interactive discussion on the theme: “Sexual violence in universities: stopping corruption and sexual harassment.” In Mahajanga, such violence often manifests as “sexual corruption” or academic blackmail.
The Anti-Corruption Pole (PAC) of Mahajanga notably established a legal precedent two years ago by convicting a teacher who solicited sexual favors in exchange for good grades.
The session helped students better understand applicable legal provisions and the criminal process, from reporting incidents to the final judgment. The director emphasized the importance of reporting misconduct, stating, “The goal is to promote the fight against corruption and encourage young people to denounce reprehensible acts. Do not hesitate to report. Bianco considers students the first link in a chain of sustainable integrity.”
Additionally, a capacity-building session for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and journalists was held at the Bianco headquarters in Mahajanga Be, focusing on corruption mechanisms, investigative tools, and strengthening synergy between media and civil society.
