A high-level joint mission from the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) visited Madagascar from July 12 to 19, 2026. Led by Ambassador Mohamed Idriss Farah, Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the AU Commission, and Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to the AU, the delegation met with Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, President of the Refondation, members of the Government, heads of institutions, and the Council of Christian Churches in Madagascar (FFKM).
At the conclusion of the visit, both organizations welcomed the willingness of the Malagasy authorities to quickly initiate an inclusive political dialogue to reach a consensus on institutional reforms and to prepare for transparent, credible, and peaceful elections. They called on all political actors and the nation’s vital forces to participate in this process responsibly.
The mission also expressed concern over recent security incidents in the capital and provinces, while reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law. The AU and the UN pledged their readiness to support Madagascar in its efforts toward stability, social cohesion, and a return to a consensual institutional order.
