Shadows over the Scepter

A wavering Creon attempts to appease the heavens,

But the Hydra in the shadows thwarts his pious wishes;

Formidable monsters besiege his crown,

Despite the good faith that radiates from his spirit.

While, for the people, a saint predicts the future,

A great cry of misfortune suddenly shudders:

Justice descends upon the frightened city,

Suffocating the revolt and the sacred warning.

At the gates of the city guarded by Cerberus,

The exhausted people curse this barrier;

They grumble against the shadows and dark intrigues,

While the king’s guard hunts without fatigue.

But a perfidious venom fuels the anger:

The child is violently taken from its poor mother.

The furious crowd even demands blood,

And the royal guard must defend its rank.

To calm the distress and the voices of the learned,

Olympus offers a treasure to measured destinies;

A gift from God offered, awaited far too late,

Which cannot erase the shadow over the departure.

So to the youth prey to a terrible storm,

The masters of knowledge bring tablets:

Things of the mind to soothe the resentment,

So that knowledge may erase the pain.
