INSECURITY – Antananarivo faces a wave of disappearances

The disappearances of children and adults are occurring one after another in the capital. Within a single week, three minors and a father were found murdered.

Just yesterday, thirteen people were reported missing in the capital, including five adults and eight minors. The report released by the police on Sunday, July 5, which stated that there had been ninety missing children since January, has already been surpassed.

Forty-three have been found. Investigations have been opened, but forty-seven remain missing. Families have received no news, and search efforts have yielded nothing. Since then, the figures have worsened, and the situation is becoming alarming.

The phenomenon is taking a dramatic turn with disappearances followed by murders. In one week, four missing persons were found dead: Sahala Fanekena, a 12-year-old girl, discovered in Amberokely on June 30; Joel, a 35-year-old father, on July 1; Fetra, a 17-year-old teenager, on July 5; and a student from the Antananarivo Institute of Technology, Johary Mitantsoa Ravelomanantsoa, 19, found yesterday, July 7, in a quarry in Ambatomaro.

Living in anxiety

The government describes these tragedies as acts of political destabilization. However, for the affected families, it is above all a human tragedy.

Parents are living in anxiety. A father, who is a civil servant, confided: “Every day, I wonder if my children will return home. We need a greater police presence in the neighborhoods.”

Eveline Rasoarimanana, a merchant, testified: “I no longer sleep. Disappearances are multiplying, and we have no guarantee of safety. We expect the authorities to take concrete measures.”

Célestin Randriamboavonjy, a farmer, issued an appeal: “Parents must be vigilant. We must accompany our children everywhere, because the danger is real.” For Claudine T., a municipal employee: “We want answers. We want to know who is behind these disappearances. Families cannot be left alone to face this tragedy.”

In the neighborhoods, fear is setting in. Disappearances follow one another, bodies are found mutilated, and calls for vigilance are growing. However, the expectation remains the same: to obtain answers from law enforcement and to see the State take concrete measures to end this wave of disappearances.
