PUBLIC SECURITY – Fokontany track down suspicious individuals

A mobilization is underway within the fokontany to improve public security. Local committees and law enforcement are coordinating their actions to track down criminals.

The fokontany of Antananarivo have been entrusted with a new mission. Since this week, neighborhood leaders have been called upon to monitor their surroundings and report any individual or behavior deemed suspicious to the authorities. “We have received instructions to monitor our area and immediately report any suspicious behavior or profiles to the higher authorities,” explained Jean Maxime Razafimahatratra, president of the Ampangabe fokontany in the 4th arrondissement of the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA), yesterday.

District authorities and security officials met with the fokontany chiefs on Monday to convey these new directives. They are relying on this new measure to strengthen security. Various forms of insecurity are currently gaining ground in the city of Antananarivo, ranging from petty theft to more serious acts, such as murders or child disappearances, which keep the population on edge.

Figures for the current year reveal that the Analamanga region is the most severely affected by this phenomenon, with ninety cases of missing children recorded since the beginning of the year, according to the Ministry of Public Security. Forty-three have been found, while forty-seven cases remain unresolved. Other reports of disappearances have been recorded in recent days.

Fokontany leaders note that this new mission will not be easy. They intend to focus primarily on monitoring non-resident visitors. “Newcomers must mandatory present a certificate of change of residence or, failing that, a letter issued by their fokontany of origin attesting to their origin. Those who do not have one will be photographed,” explains the president of the Andavamamba Anatihazo I fokontany.

Faced with the resurgence of worrying disappearances, coordination between several institutions has been established. Hundreds of members of the security forces are deployed throughout Antananarivo to carry out patrols and surveillance operations in all sectors to prevent further disappearances.

The personnel include members of the Army, the Gendarmerie, and the National Police. The Ministry of Public Security also announces the strengthening of police presence on the ground to intensify routine patrols in the heart of alleyways, narrow streets, and the maze of popular neighborhoods. The Justice system, the National Police, the Gendarmerie, and the Ministry of Population are joining forces. This strategic partnership is centered on the collection and sharing of intelligence, while actively pursuing ongoing investigations.

Large-scale awareness campaigns are being conducted jointly by the Ministry of Population and the Brigade for Morals and Protection of Minors (BPM) of the National Police to mobilize public opinion. For now, the population is far from reassured. They are calling on the authorities to deploy more rigorous measures to guarantee their safety and that of their children.
