EPIDEMIC – MAMPIKONY – A woman in her twenties dies of Mpox

The human toll of the Mpox epidemic continues to rise. A 29-year-old woman, originally from Mampikony, has succumbed to the disease. The announcement was made on July 3rd by Professor Diavolana Köcher Andrianarimanana from the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COUSP) during the presentation of the epidemiological report on the evolution of Mpox in the country.

This new death brings the total number of victims linked to Mpox since the beginning of the epidemic to fifteen. Children and people living with HIV/AIDS are among those most affected.

From December 15, 2025, to July 4, 2026, 4,117 cases were reported. Among them, 2,636 have been confirmed out of a total of 3,666 tests performed.

The report also indicates 1,809 recoveries, with a positivity rate of 72%.

Health authorities are warning against risky behaviors, particularly unprotected sexual intercourse, which can facilitate virus transmission. They are calling on the public to respect barrier measures, such as wearing masks and washing hands regularly. Mpox is transmitted mainly through close contact with an infected person.

“Prompt medical consultation remains recommended as soon as suspicious symptoms appear, such as high fever, sore throat, intense fatigue, or muscle and back pain,” indicated Professor Diavolana Köcher Andrianarimanana. Treatment is provided free of charge in dedicated treatment and isolation centers.
