POWER CUTS – Jirama subscribers take to the streets

The patience of Jirama subscribers has run out. Customers of the utility company have expressed their anger over the incessant power cuts in recent days.

Residents of Andraharo took to the streets last night. Amid whistles, burning tires, and roadblocks, these users demanded the restoration of their electricity supply. In this neighborhood, power cuts are reportedly very frequent. “We joined the protesters because the situation has become unbearable. Every month or two, the same scenario repeats. The network is repaired, then breaks down again,” testified one protester.

The latest outage dates back to Sunday. “Following Jirama’s intervention on Monday, power was only partially restored. There wasn’t even enough electricity to charge our phones. Faced with this situation, we decided to demonstrate, which immediately prompted a reaction from Jirama, who arrived at the scene as an emergency measure,” the source added.

The day before, another protest related to power cuts broke out in Alakamisy Fenoarivo. Angry residents blocked traffic, forcing road users to take long detours. “To get home, we were forced to take a long detour via Ambatomirahavavy because the residents of a village in Alakamisy Fenoarivo blocked the road to protest against the load shedding,” reported a Vontovorona resident.

Technical failures

While the protest has not yet spread to other districts of the RIA (Interconnected Network), tension is palpable and anger is growing. Residents in several neighborhoods say they are ready to follow suit and take to the streets themselves in response to the power outages. “The current situation offers a sad sense of déjà vu. Electricity is cut for long hours at night, and then again in the morning, just when we need it most to get ready for work,” says a resident of Ambohimangakely.

On Jirama’s Facebook page, where official information about power cuts is published, the company cites technical failures as the cause of current power outages in the RIA. “A broken electrical cable in Avaradoha is causing a power cut in areas supplied by line No. 25,” it stated to justify the outages in Avaradoha. Additionally, the repair of a leaning utility pole that posed a risk at Anosiarivo forced Jirama to suspend electricity supply in areas powered by the TNNO line yesterday.

A breakdown was also reported on line D1. There is no further information on yesterday’s outages, other than the announcement of 45-minute daily rotating load shedding following maintenance work on the DG2 generator set at the Afripower Mandroseza power plant. These works, scheduled to last until Saturday, July 4, 2026, are causing a significant production deficit for the RIA, Jirama admits.
