SEXUAL CRIME – Public Prosecutor’s Office detains sixty-five suspected rapists

The report from the Brigade for Morals and Protection of Minors (PMPM) in Anosy since January indicates that 65 individuals have been placed in pretrial detention for rape. Out of the 258 complaints registered, 231 involve minors. Among the suspects, eight have been incarcerated at the Anjanamasina Rehabilitation Center, ten placed under judicial supervision, five released on provisional bail, and five cases closed without further action.

Since the calm observed regarding the penalty of castration—which is included in the Penal Code but rarely pronounced—the police have noted an increase in testimonies and filed complaints. Sexual offenses continue to be systematically prosecuted, and suspected perpetrators are brought to justice.

The files also reveal violence committed within families, involving fathers and their daughters, siblings, or even mothers and their sons. Abuse of children under the age of 15 is classified as rape.

Even when victims do not file a complaint, reports are still reaching the PMPM. Awareness campaigns continue to be conducted in the field.
