CONSUMPTION – The egg market fluctuates with the seasons

In Antohomadinika, egg prices are climbing during this winter period. A decline in production and sustained demand are reducing supply, leading to a rise in market prices.

At Antohomadinika, the main wholesale hub for eggs in Antananarivo, the market is experiencing a price hike this winter. A decrease in egg-laying productivity, coupled with high demand linked to successive festivities, is directly impacting the supply available on the market. In this wholesale channel, eggs are currently selling for between 650 and 750 ariary per unit in Antohomadinika. Conversely, in grocery stores and retail outlets, the price reaches 800 to 900 ariary per unit due to the margins applied by retailers.

According to traders, this increase is mainly explained by the decline in production, particularly in supply zones like Mahitsy, which is well-known for its poultry farmers. The main customers of wholesalers are pastry chefs, grocery stores, and orders sent to the provinces, which make up a significant part of their commercial activity.

Some traders, such as Mr. Samuel, start their day at 5 a.m. and can sell between 3,000 and 10,000 eggs per day, depending on the period. Despite these high volumes, losses from broken eggs remain a major issue that reduces profits. Most sellers have been established in this field for many years.

This longevity demonstrates the stability of this business, which allows many families to make a living from the egg trade. The market also operates through a system of commercial mutual aid: some vendors act as suppliers for other merchants on the same site, procuring and redistributing eggs according to market needs. This mechanism helps maintain activity despite supply fluctuations.

According to the merchants, a drop in prices could be observed at the start of the school year and during the warm season, a period when production increases and demand becomes more stable. “In this winter period, production drops sharply, which leads to a price increase in the market,” explains a vendor in Antohomadinika.

Thus, the egg market closely follows seasonal variations. As a daily consumer product, it remains essential to household diets and occupies an important place in the economic activity of Antohomadinika.
