LITERATURE – The second volume of Tenindreny highlights the importance of the mother tongue

The second volume of Tenindreny highlights the role of the mother tongue in education, research, and sustainable development.

The mother tongue has once again taken center stage in academic discourse with the release of the second volume of Tenindreny, published yesterday as part of the Malagasy Language Month celebrations. Centered on the theme ‘Tenin’ny tany: antoky ny fanabeazana mahomby, fototry ny fampandrosoana mateza’ (The language of the land: key to effective education, foundation of sustainable development), the work underscores the importance of the Malagasy language in the country’s education and development.

Coordinated by Daniel Rajoelison and Fanjanirina Sylvie Rakotoalison, this book compiles scientific papers and results from workshops organized on February 21, 2025, by Itazoma (the Center for Research on History, Heritage, and Malagasy Societies) in partnership with the University of Antananarivo.

The 209-page book includes ten articles written by eleven researchers, with a preface by Professor Baholisoa Simone Ralalaoherivony, head of Itazoma. It is structured into two parts: the first is dedicated to linguistics, while the second covers literature, discourse, and communication.

Beyond linguistic analysis, the book traces the evolution of the Malagasy language throughout history, notably exploring successive language policies since the reign of Radama I. It also addresses the use of Malagasy on social media, communication technologies, and the preservation of dialects. The authors reiterate that language is an essential vehicle for culture and that a better understanding of dialects contributes to resolving certain issues related to Malagasy orthography.

Victor James Rakotoarisoa, Chief of Staff of the University of Antananarivo, noted: ‘Promoting Malagasy language and culture is among the university’s research priorities.’ Officials believe this publication serves as a reference to strengthen the use of Malagasy, support education, and contribute to the sustainable development of Madagascar.
