TRAFFIC – Anosy road partially reopened

Easing congestion in Anosy. Significant traffic jams have been alleviated. Motorists coming from Ambohidahy no longer need to detour via the lower part of Antsahamanitra to access the area. A road segment, where major pipeline replacement work has been underway since March, has been reopened to traffic.

“The road on the Anosy side (Editor’s note: Mohamed V Road, near Lake Anosy) is now open and is no longer closed during the day. However, it remains closed at night due to excavation and earth removal work,” explained Oyo Razakamahefa, coordinator of the Integrated Sanitation Program for Antananarivo Phase 2 (PIAA2), during a site visit yesterday to inspect the progress of the works, which are funded by the French Development Agency (AFD).

To reach Ambohidahy from Anosy, motorists must still bypass the area by taking the road passing in front of the Mahamasina garden housing complex.

New phase

The other portion of Mohamed V Avenue remains closed to traffic.

“The infrastructure installed under the roadway has not yet set. This lane should reopen around mid-July,” the official added.

These interventions represent only a portion of the first tranche of the sanitation network replacement project in Mahamasina. Starting June 29, the contractor in charge of the site will begin a new phase between the Mahamasina roundabout and the police station. This large-scale project, divided into several tranches, aims to renew all pipelines in the area, extending to Ankadilalana and Antanimbarinandriana.

To date, the overall progress rate of the Mahamasina site is 18.12%, compared to 38% for this first tranche. In Antanimena, a little over 20% of the work is complete. The reopening of that road segment is scheduled for September. “The schedule should be respected. By early August, a large part of the road should be finalized and therefore reopened to the public,” emphasized Nicolas Le Guen, AFD Director in Madagascar. These works are expected to resolve the flooding problems in the city of Antananarivo.
