LINGUISTICS – Ainteny Positions the Malagasy Language for the Future

The inaugural edition of ‘Ainteny’ will take place on June 19 and 20 at the Cité des Cultures, aiming to promote the use of the Malagasy language across all sectors of society.

Can the Malagasy language meet the challenges of the digital age, entrepreneurship, and the professional world? This is the mission of Ainteny, a new event organized by the association Teny Gasy 2.0 as part of the Malagasy Language Month.

Held under the theme ‘Ny teny Malagasy, mahalaza ny ankehitriny sy ny ho avy’ (The Malagasy language, expressing the present and the future), this first edition will bring together teachers, linguists, translators, technology experts, cultural figures, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts of the national language. The two-day event will feature conferences, digital workshops, activities for children, film screenings, exhibitions, and sales areas.

A member of Teny Gasy 2.0 noted that the initiative originated from a 2016 campaign to promote the Malagasy language on the internet. ‘This momentum led to the creation of an association dedicated to valuing our language,’ the member explained.

Today, the association consists of thirteen members based in Madagascar and abroad, working to expand the use of Malagasy in all fields. ‘The challenge is to show that our language can keep pace with modern realities. Specialized vocabulary already exists in fields such as technology, but remains relatively unknown,’ they emphasized.

Highlights of the event include workshops dedicated to writing for Wikipedia, translating into Malagasy, and promoting Malagasy history, culture, and traditions in the digital space. Through Ainteny, Teny Gasy 2.0 aims to demonstrate that the Malagasy language remains a living tool capable of supporting societal evolution and preparing for the future.
