The removal of street vendors remains a challenging operation, but the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) affirms that it will not back down. “A city without discipline cannot develop,” emphasized Feno Ralambomanana, President of the Special Delegation (PDS) of the CUA. Any activity that does not comply with current regulations will be brought back within the legal framework.
A significant amount of waste has been observed in the markets, and waste management remains a costly endeavor.
“If every citizen shows the will to maintain cleanliness, the CUA’s sanitation expenditures could be reduced,” Feno Ralambomanana stated.
This declaration was made during a press conference held at the City Hall, dedicated to presenting a major sanitation operation scheduled for tomorrow. This initiative is part of the implementation of the “Clean Madagascar” vision and the National Policy for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (PNEAH 2025–2030).
Mobilization
Furthermore, a nationwide cleaning campaign has been underway since the end of the week. It aims to strengthen solidarity and promote a healthy living environment. The 192 fokontany (neighborhoods) of the CUA have agreed to participate, and the initiative will be gradually extended to other regions. All areas are affected by this mobilization.
Regarding the sustainability of these actions, commissions have been established at the fokontany level. “Everyone is responsible and should not wait solely for the authorities,” the PDS emphasized, noting that field visits have been conducted on several occasions.
It was also reiterated that these actions go beyond mere awareness-raising; sanctions will be applied when necessary.
“The objectives of the operation are clear: to fight against waste and unsanitary conditions, clean gutters and neglected areas, and promote a culture of hygiene and better waste management,” stressed Dr. Minosoa Anjaratiana Elia Rafindriniaina, Minister of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene.
Finally, a call is made to all public administrations, communes, NGOs, associations, youth, private sector actors, and all citizens to actively participate in this mobilization. Everyone is invited to play their full role in the sanitation and cleanliness of the country.
