As the sole candidate, Emile Ratefinanahary has been re-elected for a four-year term as president of the Malagasy Karate-Do Federation (FKM). The elective general assembly was held on October 30 in Fianarantsoa, alongside the Madagascar championships for cadets, juniors, and seniors, as well as team events.
In accordance with the statutes, this election is organized every four years to renew the federal executive board. Thirteen of the fifteen regional leagues affiliated with the federation were represented. With no opponent, Emile Ratefinanahary was reappointed without surprise.
Following his re-election, the president thanked the regional league officials for their commitment and contribution to the development of the discipline. “Our sincere thanks to all the presidents and teams of the regional leagues for their commitment, availability, and contributions to the development of Malagasy karate. Together, let us continue to grow our discipline in a spirit of responsibility, respect, and fraternity,” he declared.
However, this reappointment is not unanimously supported within the Malagasy karate community. While supporters of the re-elected president welcome the continuity at the head of the federation, others regret the lack of competition during the ballot. Eva Rakotomanga notably expressed her reservations in a Facebook post.
“Malagasy karate is in a regrettable situation. How can an election be organized with only one candidate, who is automatically elected? Where is the democracy if there is no competing candidate? We are always repeating the same practices, without any real change,” she lamented.
These criticisms nevertheless raise a question: why did the opponents of Emile Ratefinanahary not present any candidates? The president thus begins a new term against a backdrop of opposition from some stakeholders. Federal governance, the development of the discipline, and the unification of the Malagasy karate family are among the expectations expressed.
