RURAL AREAS – Solar energy supports development

In Satrokala and Andiolava, solar energy is set to benefit over 240 people. The project aims to improve living conditions and support the local economy.

Access to electricity remains a major challenge for rural populations. In Satrokala and Andiolava, in the Ihorombe region, a solar energy project is expected to provide electricity to more than 240 beneficiaries. This initiative aims not only to facilitate home lighting but also to support economic activities and boost local development.

Last week, a technical team from the Rural Electrification Development Agency (ADER) visited these two localities to inspect the new installations. This mission took place ahead of the initial commissioning of the solar power plants equipped with mini-grids. The infrastructure was developed by Tozzi Green Madagascar.

On-site, technicians performed the necessary checks to verify the proper functioning of the equipment. The installations have a production capacity of 856 kilowatt-peak and include approximately five kilometers of distribution network. The system is designed to ensure a continuous power supply, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The project targets various beneficiaries, including households, small businesses, traders, and public services. Access to electricity is expected to reduce daily constraints linked to the lack of energy and offer new opportunities to residents.

The expected benefits go beyond domestic lighting. Solar energy could facilitate water pumping for household needs and agricultural activities. It should also contribute to the processing of agricultural products, allowing producers to better add value to their harvests.

“These facilities should lighten the workload of producers and foster the growth of small local businesses,” according to the authorities.

Access to a stable power supply also represents an opportunity for small entrepreneurs. It will allow them to use adapted equipment, extend their working hours, and diversify their services. Shops and workshops could thus improve their services and respond more effectively to the needs of the population.

The realization of this project is based on a public-private partnership involving the Malagasy State and Tozzi Green Madagascar. The initiative also benefits from the support of the DECIM fund, as part of a project financed by the World Bank Group.

This cooperation aims to improve access to energy in rural areas, where the lack of electricity often acts as a brake on the development of economic activities and access to essential services.

In Satrokala and Andiolava, the upcoming commissioning of the facilities marks a step forward in rural electrification. The challenge will now be to ensure the sustainability of the equipment and guarantee reliable access to energy for the beneficiaries.

Beyond improving daily life, electricity represents a development factor for these two localities in Ihorombe. Its use in productive activities could contribute to improving the living conditions of the inhabitants, stimulating the local economy, and opening new perspectives for entrepreneurs.
