ANTSIRANANA – The Ankify road in a dilapidated state

The degradation of the road surface is weakening the economy of Nosy Be. The state of the road connecting Ambalavelona, on National Road 6 (RN6), to the port of Ankify is causing deep concern.

Increasingly dilapidated, this 28-kilometer strategic axis is on the verge of asphyxiation, threatening to further complicate the transport of goods and increase logistical costs. On this essential route for serving Nosy Be, the asphalt is gradually disintegrating, leaving behind broken pavement and massive potholes. For transporters, each trip becomes a costly ordeal, as breakdowns multiply and spare parts expenses eat into profits. Passengers also suffer from the constant jolts and dust, often facing increased fares.

The heavy traffic of trucks supplying the port of Ankify and tractors used by local cocoa producers further accelerates the deterioration. Local stakeholders, such as cocoa planter Velomanana, warn that without intervention, the logistical chain will remain under pressure, potentially driving up prices and hindering economic activity in the region.
