Four individuals arrested by the police in Ambohipo last week were found in possession of counterfeit banknotes. A total of 30,000 ariary in fake currency, consisting of three 10,000 ariary notes, was recovered from them. Brought before the public prosecutor two days after their arrest, the four individuals—three women and one man—were all placed in pre-trial detention.
The arrests took place on Tuesday, October 20. The alert was raised by a merchant who noticed that a customer was attempting to pay for purchases with counterfeit money. Other merchants reportedly also received fake banknotes. Quickly dispatched to the scene, police officers from the Ambohijatovo station arrested the three women and the man. During the investigation, the suspects claimed not to know each other. Some are reportedly sex workers, while others are goods porters.
