MARCEL DUCHAMP PRIZE – Joël Andrianomearisoa shines despite missing the trophy

Although the 2026 Marcel Duchamp Prize eluded him, Malagasy artist Joël Andrianomearisoa continues to solidify his presence on the international stage.

Contemporary Malagasy art was represented among the finalists of the 2026 Marcel Duchamp Prize by Joël Andrianomearisoa. Alongside three other finalists, he presented his work, ‘Abécédaire de nos états affectifs’ (Alphabet of our emotional states), at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. The prize was awarded on October 22 to the Franco-Luxembourgish duo Brognon Rollin, consisting of David Brognon and Stéphanie Rollin.

For this edition, Joël Andrianomearisoa proposed an installation combining sculptures, sound creations, and monumental embroidery. Curated by Odile Burluraux and Nicolas Liucci-Goutnikov, his works explore human emotions and experiences. The artist describes his approach as a desire to “relearn how to read, write, live, and die.”

His selection as one of the four finalists testifies to the international recognition of his work. Through his presence in this exhibition, he also contributes to the visibility of Malagasy and African creation on the contemporary art scene.

A major distinction: Created in 2000 by the Association for the International Diffusion of French Art (ADIAF), in partnership with the Centre Pompidou, the Marcel Duchamp Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in contemporary art. It carries a total endowment of 90,000 euros, with 35,000 euros awarded to the winner. The exhibition of the finalists, which is free to the public at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, runs until February 7, 2027.
