A framework agreement to be renewed and sectoral agreements to be signed. Madagascar and Botswana have given themselves 30 days to finalize the new framework for their cooperation, originally concluded in 2006, and to further enrich it. This deadline was announced on Saturday in Gaborone by the President of the Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, following his meeting with his Botswana counterpart, Duma Gideon Boko.
The two countries intend to strengthen their cooperation in several areas, including agriculture, livestock, tourism, infrastructure, mining resources, energy, health, and vocational training. Technical teams from Madagascar and Botswana are now tasked with defining partnership priorities and drafting agreements for signature within the announced timeframe.
“We came to Gaborone to define, with Botswana stakeholders, the possibilities for cooperation in sectors where our two countries have achieved success, particularly agriculture, ecotourism, mining, and the extractive sector,” stated Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, according to a press release from the Malagasy presidency. Madagascar specifically hopes to benefit from Botswana’s experience in livestock farming and arid land management. Aiming to make the Great Island “the breadbasket of Africa,” the President of the Refoundation also highlighted the need to develop trade exchanges between the two nations, both of which are members of SADC.
The renewal of the 2006 framework agreement is a primary objective of this initiative. “Relations between the two countries must be strengthened and developed through new cooperation agreements,” emphasized Colonel Michaël Randrianirina. Duma Gideon Boko also expressed his readiness to expand bilateral relations, according to the Presidency of the Refoundation. “We can now strengthen and improve these relations to achieve rapid and inclusive economic progress,” he declared.
The two heads of state also underscored the importance of cooperation among member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). For Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, strengthening regional partnerships should contribute to economic development and the consolidation of relations between African nations.
