Malagasy music and Spanish flamenco meet in Mandry ve?, an eleven-track album by Rajery and Raúl Rodríguez, released in 2026 by Nuevos Medios. The project, supported by the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Antananarivo and the cultural association Afribuku, also involves the Spanish Embassy in Pretoria and the Malagasy travel agency Indigo Be.
The collaboration began in 2019. The two musicians met for the first time in Antananarivo and created a joint show in just four days, which was presented at the French Institute of Madagascar, the University of Ankatso, and the Tranompokonolona in Analakely. Five years later, their reunion gave birth to the track Corazón malagasy (“Malagasy Heart”), the starting point for the album.
A major figure in Malagasy music and an international reference for the valiha, Rajery champions his “Mozika Miaina,” or living music of Madagascar. Raúl Rodríguez, for his part, has spent three decades exploring the links between flamenco, Africa, and the Caribbean, while developing his own instrument, the tres flamenco.
Following a first concert in Madrid, Rajery expressed his delight with the collaboration: “It is a new and successful artistic and musical proposal. Now, everyone, including the audiences present and music professionals, believes in this duo.”
The tour continues on October 23 at the Teatre Mondial in La Bisbal d’Empordà, followed by a performance on October 25 at the Jamboree 3 venue in Barcelona, as part of the Barcelona Jazz Festival. An album presentation in Madagascar, featuring both artists, is scheduled for early 2027.
