On Monday morning, the Mahajanga municipality carried out the demolition of structures encroaching on sidewalks and drainage canals in the Tsaralaza sector of the Tsaramandroso district. The operation was conducted under the authority of the President of the Special Delegation (PDS), Guy Dolsain Arvely.
According to the municipality, the individuals involved failed to comply with regulatory alignment despite receiving three formal notices prior to the intervention. The structures were demolished by bulldozer to clear sidewalks and drainage canals, aiming to mitigate flood risks during the rainy season. This operation is part of efforts to uphold urban planning, improve road conditions, and preserve communal infrastructure.
“We will remain firm against owners who have built without permits. Illegal constructions will be demolished. We will no longer tolerate mismanagement or disorder. The development of Mahajanga must respect the urban plan,” warned the PDS. He added that municipal police will seize goods from those continuing to sell on sidewalks, and that demolitions will continue from the City Hall to the Analakely market and the regional bus station.
Today, municipal teams, accompanied by public works technicians and law enforcement, plan to continue demolitions at the Ambovoalanana regional bus station. The municipality urges residents and users to respect public space occupation rules. In Tsaramandroso, compliant merchants have resumed activities under strict conditions, such as limiting awnings to one meter and keeping sidewalks clear for pedestrians.
Local residents have expressed support but are calling for consistency, urging the municipality to also address unauthorized constructions in neighborhoods like Mangarivotra.
