In Isoraka, the Spanish National Day brought together Spaniards, Spanish-speaking Malagasy, and Latin American nationals around a shared cultural heritage.
The Spanish language and culture united several communities on Sunday, October 11, at Hakanto House in Isoraka. Organized by the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Madagascar on the eve of the October 12 National Day, the gathering brought together Spanish families, Spanish-speaking Malagasy, Latin American nationals, and partners of the consulate.
Celebrated for over a century, this day commemorates Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Caribbean in 1492. Also known as the ‘Day of Hispanicity,’ it honors the Spanish language, spoken by hundreds of millions of people around the world.
The choice of Hakanto House aligns with the desire to promote cultural exchanges. ‘Hakanto House is a quiet and fascinating place that can host this exceptional event,’ emphasized Nerea Basauri-Barruetabena, coordinator of the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Madagascar. The venue is part of Hakanto Contemporary, a cultural project initiated by Hasnaine Yavarhoussen, the Honorary Consul of Spain.
Beyond the historical commemoration, the meeting focused on sharing and conviviality. Guests mingled over Spanish tapas and sangria, blending gastronomic discovery with reunions. The diversity of the participants illustrated the ties that unite Spain, Latin America, and Madagascar through language and culture.
