TOAMASINA – Power cuts disrupt daily life

For the past week, residents of Toamasina have been experiencing four to five power cuts per day, according to local testimonies. The electricity supply in the city is once again severely disrupted due to the breakdown of several generators belonging to Enelec, the city’s main power provider.

These outages are causing significant disorganization in daily life. Residents report that the constant interruptions, occurring morning, afternoon, and evening, have become unbearable. Small businesses, particularly hair salons and bakeries, are suffering greatly, with equipment failures and service disruptions impacting their operations.

In households, the situation is equally dire. Food stored in refrigerators is at risk of spoiling, and many residents report damage to their electrical appliances due to the repeated power surges. Nighttime outages are particularly distressing, as they leave neighborhoods in darkness and heighten feelings of insecurity.

In response to the crisis, Enelec announced on October 17 that it is deploying ten mobile generators to boost production capacity. The company states that seven 350 kVA units have already arrived, and once all ten are operational, the network capacity will increase by 1.8 MW. Commissioning is expected to begin on October 20, with full operational status anticipated by early November.

Despite these measures, residents remain skeptical, as similar disruptions occurred just weeks ago. While the government has previously pressured Enelec to stabilize the supply, the recurring nature of these outages leaves the population waiting to see if the new equipment will provide a lasting solution.
