Beijing has ruled out any impact of the escape of eleven Chinese detainees on bilateral relations. Search operations are ongoing, and the director of the Avaradrano prison has been suspended.
The escape of eleven Chinese nationals from the Avaradrano prison is not expected to affect relations between Madagascar and China. This was stated by the Chinese Embassy in Madagascar in a press release published yesterday, as search operations continue to locate the escaped detainees, none of whom had been apprehended as of yesterday evening.
“We, at the Chinese Embassy, have taken note of the information regarding the escape of the eleven Chinese nationals from prison, who were involved in an online fraud case, as well as the opening of an investigation by the competent Malagasy authorities. This matter should in no way affect the relations between China and Madagascar, and we trust the Malagasy authorities in the context of their investigations,” the statement indicated.
This escape, which has sparked intense controversy since the beginning of last week, is the subject of official search operations. Last Tuesday, the Ministry of Justice issued wanted notices accompanied by individual photographs of the eleven detainees. However, the precise circumstances of their escape from the Avaradrano prison remain unknown.
As part of the measures taken following this incident, the director of the Avaradrano prison has been suspended from his duties. According to a source, a prison guard who has gone missing is also being sought.
