The distribution of public space among vehicles, pedestrians, and merchants was the focus of a meeting held on October 14 in Antananarivo between vendors and municipal officials. Led by the First Vice-President of the Special Delegation of the capital, Nirina Thierry Ralaiharison, this meeting aimed to improve market management and reiterate the rules for occupying public spaces.
“Roads are for vehicles, sidewalks for pedestrians, and markets for merchants,” is the principle defended by the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA). Through this distribution, the municipality intends to distinguish circulation areas from zones reserved for commercial activities.
The meeting brought together the Secretary-General of the commune, the market department, the digital development department, and their staff. Discussions focused on market management and proposals to improve their operations.
The municipality invites merchants to go directly to City Hall to present their suggestions. This approach aims to involve them in the reflection on the organization of the capital’s markets.
The challenge is to reconcile commercial activities with vehicle traffic and pedestrian movement. The distribution of spaces is the principle put forward by municipal officials to organize the occupation of the public domain. However, the concrete measures planned to implement this direction have not yet been detailed. Their implementation will allow for an assessment of the impact of this approach on sales conditions, traffic, and the use of sidewalks in the capital.
