HEALTH – Plague cases reported in Analamanga

The plague, a recurring phenomenon, began appearing at the end of July. Particular attention is focused on Analamanga, which is among the regions where cases have been formally confirmed.

According to the epidemiological report prepared by the Ministry of Public Health, four cases of plague have been confirmed to date nationwide. These cases are distributed across three districts: Ankazobe and Anjozorobe in the Analamanga region, as well as Ambohimahasoa in the Haute Matsiatra region. No deaths have been recorded in these areas, according to a source from the ministry. These cases highlight the ongoing vulnerability of the Analamanga region to rodents and vector fleas during the cool and humid season.

In parallel with these confirmed cases, the vigilance of the epidemiological surveillance network has led to the detection of other potential outbreaks. On October 10, 2026, the Directorate of Communicable Disease Surveillance received an alert from the Midongy Atsimo district. Field investigations conducted by rapid response teams revealed five (05) additional suspected cases, whose samples are currently being analyzed at the reference laboratory.

To contain any risk of spread around the identified outbreaks in Analamanga and other regions, the Ministry of Public Health has deployed an emergency protocol. The affected individuals were immediately taken into care and placed under medical treatment. To break the chain of transmission, preventive antibiotic treatment was administered to nearly 200 people who had been in direct contact with the patients, all of whom are under strict medical supervision.

On the ground, the vector control response is organized around the systematic disinfestation of homes and their surroundings to eliminate fleas, followed by active case finding. Simultaneously, community health workers are intensifying sanitation efforts and vector control measures against the proliferation of rats.
