Hip-hop brought together multiple generations at Antsahamanitra. Organized this Saturday by Hip Hop Works Madagascar to mark World Mental Health Day, the ’16 Mesures Live’ concert drew a large crowd. According to the organizers, the turnout was so high that an hour after the show began, spectators were still queuing at the entrance, illustrating the public’s keen interest in seeing Malagasy hip-hop artists on stage.
The program showcased several generations of Malagasy rap. The new generation opened the show with artists such as Tommy Montana from Toamasina, Illicit Soul, Geoscar, Vercors, Double G, and Kintaniavo. Figures from the older generation then took over, notably Bogota and Mason’Aloka. This meeting between artists of different backgrounds and generations is one of the project’s core objectives.
“It had been a long time since a hip-hop show took place at Antsahamanitra. The public was waiting for this event and they came in large numbers,” the organizers noted, satisfied with the mobilization.
The project was structured around three highlights: the ’16 Mesures Contest’, won by Eklyps ahead of Ho-Toavina and Scka, with Tata An’Ala named as the crowd favorite; the ’16 Mesures Combo’, focusing on collaborations between artists; and finally, the ’16 Mesures Live’, which served as the event’s climax.
Beyond the stage, ’16 Mesures’ carries a message of awareness regarding mental health and suicide prevention. “We want to bring together the old and new generations and create a space where everyone finds their place,” the organizers explained. The project also intends to contribute to the establishment of a mental health hotline in Madagascar, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
