MAHAJANGA – NEW EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM – Private schools platform calls for dialogue

The platform of private schools in Madagascar suspended classes all day yesterday in Mahajanga. Teachers and school principals gathered at the headquarters of the Mahajanga Cisco (School District) in the Manga fokontany to protest against the implementation of the new educational curriculum in Madagascar. Its rapid application is causing concern and tension, particularly within private education.

The private education platform notes a lack of preparation, the absence of adapted textbooks, and organizational difficulties in the face of these major changes. “We call on the authorities not to rush the changes, but rather to ensure first that institutions have the necessary materials and preparation,” said its spokesperson, Father François Xavier Rakotomamonjy.

While the platform finds the modification of the 2027 baccalaureate exam, decided by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, to be satisfactory, it contests the Ministry of National Education’s decision dated September 18, which mandates that public and private institutions apply the new Educational Program (PE). According to the spokesperson, this measure does not reflect the reality on the ground and requires further study.

Father François Xavier Rakotomamonjy also criticized the ministry for failing to organize a national education council. He pointed out that experiments in pilot high schools showed that six steps remain to be taken before the reform is applied. “Where is the training for teachers to implement the program? The program documents are circulating on social media, but we have not received them. Furthermore, they are being sold,” he lamented.

The platform also noted that the procedures for the CEPE exam remain unclear, as do those for options A and B in the BEPC exam. “We are not looking for conflict, but rather to be consulted and to negotiate,” the spokesperson clarified. The platform is requesting a meeting with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Ministry of National Education, and the Ministry of Technical Education and Vocational Training.

The resolutions were submitted to the head of the Mahajanga I Cisco, Jocelyn Elson. “I acknowledge receipt of this letter. We will send it immediately to the regional director of National Education for Boeny as well as the supervisory ministry, and we will await further measures. We are only executors,” the Cisco head stated.

The new educational system in Madagascar plans for a vast reform of school curricula, the introduction of new disciplines, and an overhaul of the general baccalaureate series starting from the 2027 session.
