Boeny Region: Economic Units Census Underway

The Boeny region is the first to host the major General Census of Economic Units (RGE) operation led by the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT). This extensive operation aims to inventory all economic activities in the country, with a specific focus on the Boeny region.

The launch of the RGE in the region was preceded by training for investigators. Since the beginning of this week, 250 young people have been undergoing training in Mahajanga to prepare for data collection operations. The project is funded by the World Bank.

Following this training, investigators will be deployed across the six districts of the Boeny region—Mahajanga I and II, Marovoay, Mitsinjo, Soalala, and Ambato Boeny—as well as the district of Besalampy. The goal is to collect reliable data on all economic units, including formal and informal businesses and structures, to better understand the regional economic landscape.

“This operation aims to census businesses and economic establishments. Before the deployment of investigators, field visits will help prepare and identify the various sites involved in the census,” explained the INSTAT representative.

This statement was made during a visit to the Secretary General of the Boeny region, Ida Jacqueline Rakotonirina Harinarivo, at the Ampisikina administrative block last week. “We are grateful for your project and encourage you to carry this action through to completion,” emphasized the Secretary General. A main data collection phase was launched in July at the national level and is currently continuing in various regions of the country.
