The Boeny Regional Directorate of Commerce is intensifying its inspections at local markets to verify the measuring instruments used by merchants for selling various goods.
During the third surprise inspection conducted this year, officials seized several non-compliant measuring instruments at the Morafeno market last Monday.
“Some merchants strive to comply with the law and use compliant equipment. However, recalcitrant individuals continue to violate regulations and laws. They use rigged scales and bags of rice or sand as weights. Previously, we carried out awareness campaigns. Now, we are enforcing the law and seizing falsified instruments. Furthermore, these individuals are summoned to the office for questioning,” stated Faniry Harisoa Razafinimanana, the Regional Director of Commerce for Boeny.
In light of these practices, consumers are urged to remain vigilant and refuse the use of non-compliant measuring instruments. They can also file a complaint with the Legal Metrology Service to assert their rights and benefit from better protection.
These surprise inspections are regularly conducted in various markets of Mahajanga, notably in Tsaramandroso, Morafeno, and Mahabibo. Vegetable, meat, and fish sellers are particularly targeted, as their weighing instruments are frequently subject to customer complaints.
