HIGHER EDUCATION – Rectors reshape the future of universities

Ten countries and territories from Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean are meeting in Antananarivo to strengthen exchanges, research, and joint projects.

The future of universities is also being shaped at a regional level. Gathered yesterday at the University of Antananarivo, rectors and heads of institutions belonging to the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) placed cooperation at the heart of their discussions. The 4th Regional Conference of Rectors brings together representatives from ten countries and territories in Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean.

The meeting aims to define the main guidelines for the Regional Conference of Rectors for the coming years. The new AUF strategy for 2026-2029 is among the key topics addressed, along with the renewal of the organization’s governance.

Discussions also focus on the transformations affecting higher education. Digital technology and artificial intelligence occupy a central place among the six selected areas of reflection. The promotion of research, peace and conflict management, climate change, regional mobility, as well as project development and co-financing are also on the agenda.

Beyond defining broad guidelines, the conference intends to foster the emergence of new avenues for cooperation between institutions. Participants are examining ways to develop academic exchanges, strengthen research, and implement joint projects on a regional scale.

This meeting comes at a time when higher education institutions must adapt their practices to rapid changes, particularly with the arrival of artificial intelligence in academic life. Regional cooperation thus appears as a lever to support these changes and build common responses.
